Vegas’ Preseason College Football Top Ten, Buckeyes edge out Tide for top spot
Nearly every college football preseason poll has the defending BCS champion Alabama Crimson Tide ranked at the top spot except for this one. More often than not, Vegas gets it right, so why not use the odds they come with to construct the most accurate preseason college football poll. By using the BCS National Championship odds supplied by online gambling outfits, the Ohio State Buckeyes have the best shot at hoisting the BCS trophy on January 10, 2011.
1. Ohio State (+450)
The Buckeyes have owned the Big Ten over recent years, winning five straight titles. Despite this dominance, they do not have a national title to show for it. Quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Terrelle Pryor is back to lead a Buckeye offense that returns ten starters. The defense also returns plenty of starters from a unit that ranked fifth in the nation in 2009. Add the fact that they play eight games in front of the home crowd and anything less than a ten win season would be a huge disappointment in Colombus.
2. Alabama (+500)
The defending BCS champs also return plenty of firepower on the offensive side of the ball led by Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. Besides Ingram, eight starters return in total for the Crimson Tide including senior QB Greg McElroy and receiver Julio Jones. Obviously the Tide will be able to put points of the scoreboard but will they be able to keep their opponents from doing the same? Just one starter returns from last year’s defensive unit, so it will be almost impossible for them to repeat last year’s dominant output.
3. Oklahoma (+600)
This is about as high as you will see the Sooners ranked headed into the season. In order to be in the hunt for the BCS National Championship, they’ll need consistency from sophomore quarterback Landry Jones. His top target from last season, Ryan Broyels Jr. returns coming off a 15 touchdown season. The defensive side of the ball will have seven new, albeit talented starters. The biggest key for the Sooners in 2010 is for all the key players to remain healthy, unlike last season.
4. Florida (+700)
Who has the biggest shoes to fill in perhaps college football history? His name is John Brantley; that’s who will replace Tim Tebow under center in Gainesville. Brantley should have plenty of time to throw as four starters return on the offensive line. Running back Jeffery Demps is coming off two straight seven touchdown seasons and is prime for even bigger numbers as he doesn’t have to share carries with Tebow. Seven starters return on defense with studs waiting in the wings to take over for the departed. An October 2nd showdown at Alabama is circled on every bettors calendar; the Gators are currently 3 point underdogs.
5. Boise State (+1000)
Yup, that’s right, a school from a non-BCS conference is ranked in the top 5 and has a 10% chance of winning the national title according to the bookies. This shouldn’t surprise anyone considering the Broncos were a flawless 14-0 last season including a 17-10 victory over #4 TCU in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The defense should be rock solid as ten starters from 2009 return. Ten starters also return on an offense that lit up the scoreboards in ‘09. Quarterback and Heisman candidate Kellen Moore threw 39 touchdowns and only 3 picks last year. They’ll be test early as they are just 2.5 point favorites as they visit Virginia Tech on September 6th.
6. Nebraska (+1200)
Even though the Huskers lost Ndamukong Suh to the NFL, they return plenty of talent on defense and should still dominate in 2010. Their offense wasn’t anything special last year, although they do return four starters on the offensive line, a thousand yard rusher (Roy Helu Jr.) and their three top receivers so improvement is expected. The Huskers have a favorable schedule as they’ll most likely be betting favorites in every game. They are currently 2.5 point favorites at home against Texas on October 16th.
7. Texas (+1500)
Speaking of the Longhorns, they make the third Big 12 team ranked in the top seven teams in the country. Coming off an undefeated regular season and a loss to Alabama in the National Championship game, Texas returns tons of talent. QB Colt McCoy has moved onto the NFL and his replacement will be Sophomore Garrett Gilbert who showed off some of his potential after replacing an injured McCoy in the title game. Back-to-back games versus Oklahoma on October 2nd, then on the road at Nebraska on October 16th will go a long way to determine whether the Longhorns can make it back to the title game. Texas is currently field goal underdogs versus the Sooners.
8. TCU (+1500)
The Horned Frogs rolled off a flawless 12-0 record before their Fiesta Bowl loss the Boise State. In their last seven 2009 regular season games, TCU scored at least 38 points in each game and scored 50+ in three of the last four. Points shouldn’t be a problem in 2010; four starts are back on the offensive line, signal caller Andy Dalton returns as does a able rushing duo. Don’t be surprised if TCU has another undefeated regular season. However, that still may not be enough to land them in the title game. They open at home versus Oregon State as 13 point favorites.
9. Oregon (+2000)
The Ducks ranked seventh in the nation in scoring last season (36.1 ppg). Those numbers could actually increase as nine starters return of offense including the entire line. Running back LaMichael James also returns after churning out 1,546 rushing yards and 14 scores last season. Nine starters also return on defense. With so much returning talent from a team that tallied ten wins last year, Oregon at +2000 to win it all screams ‘value’. Their biggest challenge will come on October 30th when they visit USC as 3 point dogs.
10. Iowa (+2500)
The Hawkeyes are coming off an 11 win season in which they didn’t lose their first game until November. There are six returning starters on offense including quarterback Ricky Stanzi and leading rusher Adam Robinson. In 2009, Iowa’s defense allowed only one opponent to score over 24 points in a game. Considering that eight starters return on D, they should be even better this year. Finally, Iowa will play all of their toughest games at home as Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State all travel to Iowa this year.

Buckeye Classics-V05 $9.16 Woody Hayes: Fiery and controversial yet compassionate and concerned, these are but a few of the words to describe of one of college footballs most successful — yet contentious — coaches, Woody Hayes. In 28 season as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Hayes won three national titles, thirteen Big Ten championships, coached scores of all-Americans and some of college footballs most legendary players. He also gained a reputation as a harsh disciplinarian given to unpredictable outburst of rage and fury. But those who knew him best knew Woody as a man of deep convictions who dedicated his life to the people around him. For Woody, the concept was called Paying Forward and it became the cornerstone of his life and the foundation of his legacy. 1995 Notre Dame: On September 30th, 1995, two of college footballs most powerful and storied programs met in Ohio Stadium to renew a rivalry left dormant for almost 60 years. Their previous battle in the Horseshoe had been called the greatest game in the first 50 years of college football, but victory that day was with the Irish. The return engagement offered John Coopers Buckeyes a chance for revenge and their own place in Buckeye history. |
