Reading in Crisis, Report Says, Just Like Writing – But ‘NewView’ Has Solution, Says Expert

The head of NewView Options, Bill Drew, claims that “Our students aren’t doing well on national reading tests or writing tests. In reading scores, Drew is referring to the very recent press release of last week, on March 24, 2010 ( http://bit.ly/ReadingReportCard ), that was put out by the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that, “Today’s results once again show that the achievement of American students isn’t growing fast enough. After modest gains in recent years, 4th grade reading scores are flat and 8th grade scores were up just one point.”

Drew pointed out that from 1992 to 2009 – a seventeen-year period – the national average in reading scores for fourth graders and eighth graders has changed very little, by only 4 percent, in fact. He also expanded on what it all means in the bigger perspective: “Because only 33 percent of our fourth and eighth graders can read at grade level, it means our elementary and middle school students will be poorly prepared for doing school work at the high school level and, ultimately, at the college level. And that means that our future business men and women will be unable to compete well in the global economy, which is becoming more competitive by the day.”

On U.S. student writing troubles, Drew referred to an April 2003 press release ( http://bit.ly/NCWReport ) by the National Commission on Writing (NCW) and to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics of April 2008 ( http://bit.ly/2008ReportCard ). Both reports showed there were no significant increases in the Proficient level of writing of high school seniors in national testing. For more than seventeen years now, that has been the case.

So why aren’t we seeing a significant increase in student reading and writing skills across the nation? “Because schools teach only the mechanical forms of reading and writing. Now, don’t get me wrong here,” Drew explained. “You need mechanical forms in both reading and writing, but if that’s all you’ve got, then you’ve got less than half the pie. You need the content that generates and uses forms in reading and writing. And it just doesn’t work the other way around; forms do NOT generate content. But that’s what’s being taught in schools across the nation – only form.

“There’s no theory and no process being taught in schools that generates content for reading and for writing across the board – except my NewView theory and processes, that is. Because of that horrible report on writing in 2008, I decided to make NewView-which is the secret DNA of writing-available to the public. The power and beauty of my NewView approach to reading and writing is that it provides not only a important principle-’What’s new to the reader’-but also great practical steps and methods for use with both reading and writing.” Drew further explained that NewView came out of his thesis for his Master’s degree on composition.

Drew claims that several high school teachers are using his NewView principle and methods to teach both reading (nonfiction as well as fiction) and writing.
